Sportbikes are the high performance bikes of the motorcycle world. Also known as "race replicas" or "crotch rockets" they can be pretty unforgiving, have very high revving fierce engines and uncomprising ergonomics which puts the rider in a race like position.

Their overall design makes them less practical for street use and better suited to the race track but this doesn't affect the popularity of this kind of bike with all ages of riders.

They are as light weight as is possible and their accelleration and handling characteristics are as close as a real-world rider can get to the bikes used in professional supersport and superbike racing around the world.

They are broadly split into a 600cc and 1000cc class which numerous motorcycle manufacturers producing models outside of these two categories.

There are also "entry level" sportbikes for new riders which have engines ranging from between 50cc and 250cc.

They thus have less power and are not as unforgiving to novice riders although they do introduce them to the sportbike experience and the particular marque whose produced the bike...which from their perspective hopes to entice you up the brand and onto bigger and better things.
