The "Dual-Sport" motorcycle is a relatively modern conception for
a motorcycle specfically designed for its dual role - of being proficient
on both pavement and off-road.
As such they are the steed of choice for most adventure riders but are also
popular amongst commuters due to their comfortable riding position (sitting
up), reliability and presence on the road.
They are characterised and distinguished from pure road bikes by their longer
suspension travel which gives them real-world dirt credentials, their ability
to hold large amounts of luggage for long distance trips and their solid mpg
(mile per gallon) figures which extend the distance between fill-ups - a necessity
for the traveler and a cost effective solution for the commuter.
Real road performance is still very strong especially on less than perfect
back roads full of imperfections with their high torque engines and recogniseable
wide handlebars giving the rider the ability to both keep a strong pace and
throw the bike in and out of corners.
They are perhaps the best real-world motorcycles in production today but when
researching be sure to take note of the differences between the models available
as some (particularly the Ducati Multistrada, Buell Ulysses) have much less
off-road performance in comparison to the big BMW GS models and less still
than the KTM Adventure series.
